Can AI replace consultants?
AI can replace consultant hours on recurring, well-defined work such as monthly reporting, reconciliations, research summaries, first-pass contract review and ticket triage. It should not replace work that needs executive presence, negotiation or regulated sign-off. The test is simple: if the work repeats and the output can be checked, it can usually be automated.
Work AI does well
| Task type | Typical ladder step | Human role |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly reporting packs | Rules + small model | Controller approves |
| Account reconciliations | Rules | Sign-off on exceptions |
| Research summaries | Small / mid model | Expert validates |
| Ticket triage | Small model | Agent sends reply |
Work it should not do alone
- Legal advice and regulated sign-off
- Audit negotiation and board-level politics
- Automated candidate selection (high-risk AI under the EU AI Act)
Why projects fail without an ROI grind
Most stalled AI projects miss a baseline and a monthly measure of value. We start with an ROI case and the OUTCOME Method so cost and benefit stay visible.
Five-question self-test
- Does the same work repeat every week or month?
- Can someone check the output against a clear standard?
- Do you have data in systems we can connect to?
- Is there a named owner who can approve results?
- Can you state the cost of today's process in hours or SEK?
Three or more yes answers → use the calculator or compare pricing models.
